FAQ's
The Founder answers interesting questions with
his usual candor:
Q: How do I know that Barebones Consulting can help with my situation?
(also: How do I know I won't get ripped off? Do you have a money
back guarantee - or a free trial?)
J: Most new clients find it reassuring that the company Founder
and Chief Consultant still schedules every first appointment. I
advance that courtesy to our clients, with past experience that
shows we give a lot more than we take. "Value" is the essence of
our consulting business. We get so much done in so little time,
that our fees are never an issue.
Q: Your "per minute" fee seems "gimmicky" (or
confusing/annoying/stupid). Why not use more traditional terminology?
J: One reason is that we do 40% of our work in less than one hour
increments. Quick business writing assignments, advice and research,
mystery shopping by email or phone, creative ideas on demand and
technology help are a few examples. We also have ongoing support
for established customers where a minimum fee is not mandated. I
know it's strange, since most consulting companies won't even start
thinking about a client without billing at least a few hours.
"Per Minute Billing" also keeps us - and the customer - focused
on efficiency and productivity
Finally, we like being "different." Barebones Consulting is not
"traditional" in any way. I grew up in Michigan, graduated from
one of its two largest universities (the website colors are misleading
here), and over 90% of our clients are in Michigan: an area that
has suffered from too much traditional thinking. We see some Michigan
companies performing exceedingly well in this tough economy; but
they are the exceptions right now. Most of them have implemented
non-traditional approaches.
Q: I see that Barebones Consulting provides services in the area
of Gay and Lesbian Issues. Are you gay? (Or is Barebones Consulting
a "gay" company?)
J: It is awkward, and lacks style for me to have this question
posted publicly. Answering it will undoubtedly offend some people.
However, the fact that we receive this type of inquiry at least
once a month demonstrates the need for increased understanding of
these issues. To answer your question directly, I am straight. As
far as the other consultants, I only require that they are professional,
trustworthy and keep our client's goals and satisfaction as their
number one priority.
Q: Our relationship with Barebones Consulting is working well.
Can we schedule the consultant full-time (or part-time; or for fixed
hours per week/month)?
J: Absolutely. Some clients schedule several hours per week or month;
others only a few hours per year. We are also a convenient, cost-effective
solution for projects and problem solving on an "as needed" basis.
Remember, we don't require expensive, long-term contracts. So, you
only pay for what you use.
Q: Is it true that you have a book coming out?
J: I suspect family members, loyal clients and friends are submitting
this question to give encouragement. Thanks; but the truth is, running
Barebones Consulting and meeting with clients is immensely satisfying
to me. At the risk of being guilty of gratuitous self-promotion:
Yes, a book and a guide will be available shortly. Check Amazon.com
for the guide in Summer 2008, and the book later in the year. I
suspect the submitters of this question will already know what to
look for. Again, thanks for the support guys.
